I have just returned from O.C. Tanner’s Influence Gr8nss conference in Park City, Utah, where I had the chance to spend some time with the lovely and talented Tim Gunn—keynote speaker, fashion consultant, and star of the hit television program Project Runway. His keynote speech on mentoring strategy was a nice cap to two days of exploring insights on creating culture—and I am happy to report that his professional assessment of my new jeans was that I “made them work!”
Speaking of things that work, O.C. Tanner, a global recognition and engagement company, used the conference as an opportunity to launch Culture Cloud, the latest evolution of its culture-building platform. The platform combines their suite of legacy recognition and award services and adds a new product called Align. The tool is designed to enable and improve one-on-one meetings between managers and employees by allowing both parties to save notes before and after conversations, build agendas, link to goals, document development actions, and access meeting reports.
One-on-one meetings are one of the most fundamental forms of recognition (i.e., an opportunity to be seen and supported), and the addition of this offering is a natural extension of O.C. Tanner’s product line.
The conference also saw the release of the O.C. Tanner Institute’s 2018 Global Culture Report, based on primary research conducted on more than 14,000 employees from around the globe. While I am still wading through the 146-page report, some early highlights include the following statistics on diversity and culture1:
- Employees who feel their company fosters an inclusive culture are 3.2x more likely to feel empowered to perform their best work
- Employees who feel a sense of belonging at their company are 5.3x more likely to feel empowered to perform their best work
While perhaps intuitive, these are significant, powerful, and specific reminders of the critical importance of connection and inclusion in the workplace.
In addition to product and research launches, the conference featured several interesting main stage presentations. One that really held my attention was hearing Carey Lohrenz (author of Fearless Leadership and the first female F-14 Tomcat fighter pilot in U.S. Navy history2) discuss her experience breaking barriers and performing at an exceptional level in some of the most stressful and high-stakes situations imaginable. Just in time for the reboot of Top Gun in theaters3, Mrs. Lohrenz reminded us that there is nothing cooler than having the ability and tenacity to break barriers and stereotypes while forging your own path to Gr8nss.
