SaaS at Your Service

Did you know that HR is a leader in the cloud revolution? It’s true: Human Capital Management (HCM) is one of the primary drivers of the growth of the cloud and the use of cloud capabilities “as a service.” In particular, Software as a Service (SaaS) is used to enable HCM processes such as global HR administration, recruiting, training, succession, compensation, performance and others across geographies. SaaS is not just a buzz word in HCM, it is a reality.

In addition to HR being a model for Cloud/SaaS adoption, HR leaders can also play a role in preparing the organization to adopt SaaS in general. For example, adopting SaaS for sales and customer relationship management might mean equipping employees with new skills to use the technology and collaborate with one another differently than in the past. Functional roles and responsibilities may also need to be redefined. IT, for example, can take on more strategic pursuits once it no longer has to focus on duties such as software upgrades and routine maintenance. As a result, IT competencies and staffing models may need to change. On the flip side, business units may have more responsibility for decisions involving their systems and data. Decision rights and IT governance will also likely need to be reassessed and strengthened to help protect the company’s data security and privacy.

We examine these issues and more in Cloud hits the enterprise in the current issue of Deloitte Review. Given that cloud solutions, led by SaaS, are predicted to grow by nearly 900 percent over 10 years (see Forrester for details), it’s essential for business leaders to understand the ins and outs—and, yes, there are minuses to consider as well as pluses. Exploring if, how and when to deploy SaaS is a topic worthy of every leader’s agenda.
